Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is an authorization card?

A: In this instance, an authorization card functions primarily like a petition. It will be used to show to the Governor’s Office that a majority of Executive Branch Merit Employees wish to form a union for the purpose of collective bargaining.

Q: If I sign a card, does that mean I have to pay dues?

A: No. This authorization card does not obligate you to pay dues. It is not tied to membership in the union. It simply states that you would like to be able to bargain over your wages, benefits, and working conditions.

Q: If I sign a card, will my employer know?

A: No. The decision to sign a card is solely yours. Teamsters organizers will never show your boss your card. The only way your employer will know if you have signed a card is if you choose to tell them.

Q: Can I help get my co-workers to help people sign up and can I get involved in process?

A: Yes. There is power in numbers and the sooner we reach our card check agreement, the sooner we can begin negotiating a contract with Commonwealth.

Q: Can I talk with the Teamsters after work if I can’t attend a worksite visit?

A: Yes, you can set up an in-person or virtual meeting with a Teamsters organizer.

Q: Does this cost any money to right now organize?

A: No, there is no cost to you until you and your co-workers vote to ratify a collective bargaining agreement.
